U.S. Payrolls Rise 29,000; Unemployment at 4.2%
The United States added 29,000 nonfarm payroll jobs in September 2026, while unemployment stood at 4.2%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics report released on October 2 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time (4:30 p.m. Dubai time).
Wages and revisions
Average hourly earnings for private nonfarm employees increased 0.1% over the month to $37.81 and were 3.0% higher than a year earlier.
July payroll growth was revised from 21,000 to a decline of 10,000. August growth was revised from 162,000 to 133,000. Together, the revisions reduced the previously reported two-month total by 60,000 jobs.
Reading the figures
Payroll employment and unemployment come from separate surveys. The payroll figure measures jobs at establishments; the unemployment rate comes from the household survey. The monthly result and revisions should therefore be read alongside wages, rather than treating one figure as a complete picture of the labor market.
This report summarizes official results. It does not compare them with an independently verified market consensus or attribute a market move to the release.
